Higher Ground
By Bob Egbert
Clouds swirl around.
Rain pounding down,
But the people don’t see,
Unwilling to flee.
There are bills to pay
And games to play.
Who can say which
Way we should go.
A night on the land.
And I’m trying to stand,
Bagging sand with heavy hands,
Searching for higher ground.
Bob Egbert lives in Roanoke. He is a retired Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and a Vietnam veteran. He and his wife, Susan, have self-published a book titled Painted Words, which can be found at Left of Center Art Space in Roanoke.
